中大英語自學資源 English Learning Resources at NCU

Now that English has become a national requirement for all students, universities are also putting in more effort to help them achieve better mastery of the language. Here at National Central University, students are required to be certified by English proficiency tests such as given by GEPT or TOEIC before they can graduate. To help students improve their English, the university established a Language Center that offers courses such as Freshman English or remedial English. In addition, the Language Center also provides all kinds of materials such as textbooks, magazines, movies and test orientation reference book for self-study by students of every level of writing, listening, reading, and speaking.

I am most impressed by two services: one is the i-magazine and the other is online audio books. The university has bought copyright from the most famous English learning magazines in Taiwan to post them online for our students. The material includes not only the monthly magazine itself, but also the teaching/reading sound track of every single article in the magazine. The university also provides a website with hundreds of novels and short stories presented in the audio form. From Jane Austin’s series works to Shakespeare’s great plays, you can decide what stories you want to listen whenever you feel like. And all these are free to registered students.

In order to encourage student to make the most of the material, the university organizes many instructional meetings to teach student how to learn English by themselves.
